Larp Knights and Honour; the Larp Chivalric Code

How to start a Larp Knight

Firstly you need to check with the organisers of the live action role playing system that the character will be taking part in to see if knightly types are allowed as starting or new characters or whether you have to start as a squire or similar rank and then become knighted in character through the course of your adventures. Then find out if you will be a member of a chivalric order or whether you have to be an individual. Choose a suitable name and you are almost ready to go.

A Larp Costume that is suitable for a Knight

One of the great things about playing a chivalric character is that you can have a coat of arms. Most Larping systems have orders in place and you can use theirs. However you can always add a personal emblem as well just like medieval knights and there are numerous ideas all over the internet if you do a heraldry search or similar. You can of course always come up with your own unique design. You can have this on your shield, surcoat, and tabard and even go so far as to have it on gloves, bags and other personal equipment. If you really want to go the extra mile you could have it on a wax seal that you put on in character letters and documents. Armour is of course an excellent addition and any knight will look good the more armour he wears, you can buy this from online live role playing shops or even make your own.

Making your own chivalric Larp code

Every Knight has the code by which they live; this is known as a set of tenants. These are the everyday rules by which the knight lives their life. These could include such things as; always accept surrender, protect the weak, never flee, always tell the truth, treat friends and enemies alike with respect. Each character should design their own set or ask the live role playing organisers if they have some already set down for their system.

Making sure that other Larp players welcome your character

Many players in Live Action Roleplaying are far from honourable and trustworthy so try to avoid playing your knight in such a way that will put you in opposition to them. An obvious example of this is do not have a goodly character that crusades against evil in a role playing game that allows other players on your team to be evil. If you are roleplaying someone who has to set himself against other gamers then they are not going to want you on the same adventure and friction will arise. Much better to have a knight who defends those weaker than him and then most non warrior types will be glad you are there and other warriors will instantly treat you as a comrade in arms.

Your Larp Career as a Knight

It is important to have a quest to fulfil and this would be best achieved early on in your career. Give your referees some ideas and they will undoubtedly come up with some input as referees love this sort of thing. Most of all enjoy yourself and the part you are playing because that is what live action role playing is all about!
